Aesthetic doctors are increasingly treating the temples with dermal fillers as part of cosmetic procedures. But why is this done, and what should you consider before choosing this treatment? On this page, you’ll find everything you need to know about temple filler treatments.

Cosmetic treatments over the years

More than 20 years ago, doctors performed so-called “wrinkle treatments”. They would place a filler directly under a wrinkle—for example, filling the nasolabial fold—or use botulinum toxin to smooth forehead lines or crow’s feet. Today, cosmetic treatments are very different. The focus is now on the underlying causes of skin ageing.

Is it due to a loss of collagen or elastin in the skin? Or the natural shrinking of the facial skeleton? Based on this, a personalised treatment plan is created—one that enhances the natural strengths of a person’s face while subtly addressing the causes of ageing. Very often, even a relatively small treatment can create a noticeable impact, with results that last.

Desired facial proportions

An increasing number of aesthetic doctors now take ideal proportions as their starting point. This often leads to longer-lasting and more natural results. One example is aiming for a smooth, rounded forehead and even temples. Irregularities or hollowing in these areas can immediately create an older-looking appearance. By contrast, younger people rarely have sunken temples. If temple hollowing does appear, this can be effectively treated with dermal fillers.

Treating hollow temples with fillers

The temples can be treated in several ways, though hyaluronic acid fillers are most commonly used. These fillers come in different thicknesses (also called levels of cohesivity). For temple treatment, a volumising hyaluronic acid filler is often chosen. Products such as Restylane Lyft or Aliaxin EV are examples of suitable volumising fillers.

Some practitioners prefer to use a slightly “softer” (less cohesive) hyaluronic acid filler instead. In this case, volume is placed in the dermis, rather than deeper in the tissue where volumising fillers are injected. Depending on your skin and treatment goals, your practitioner will recommend the most suitable technique.

How long does it last, and what about complications?

A filler treatment for hollow temples typically lasts between 9 and 18 months. With regular follow-up treatments, the results may last even longer over time.

The risk of complications from filler treatments is generally low, but they can occasionally occur. In the UAE, thousands of filler procedures are performed each year, the majority for cosmetic purposes. That’s why it can feel especially disappointing if the outcome is less than expected due to a complication.

Although the likelihood is very small, it’s important to be aware of the risks and include them in your decision-making. To reduce risks, always choose a qualified medical professional—such as a doctor, nurse, or dentist—who is licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH), or Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) and has specific training in aesthetics.

Which practitioners treat the temples?

Not every practitioner offers temple filler treatments. For example, those who are newly qualified or have limited experience may choose not to perform this procedure. It is strongly recommended to choose a qualified and experienced medical professional. Ideally, this would be someone who performs aesthetic treatments regularly, such as a doctor, nurse, or dentist with specialist training in aesthetics. In the UAE, practitioners should be licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH), or the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP), and ideally hold additional qualifications in cosmetic medicine. This ensures they meet recognised professional standards and are accountable to their regulatory body.

Prices per millilitre of filler can vary significantly between clinics. It’s always worth comparing providers in your area to ensure the right balance between expertise, safety, and value.
